South Fork Fishing Report

Updated: July 21st, 2010 by Todd Lanning

Fishing is great. Dry flies are hatching throughout the system. We are seeing Yellow Sallies, PMD’s, golden stones, and some caddis on the upper river. Nymphing, rubber legs, san juan worms, copper johns, and pheasant tails is very productive on the upper river. Look for fish feeding in the riffles. Pink PMD’s and small yellow sallies are working well. We are seeing golden stones, yellow sallies, and a few salmon flies down the canyon. Fish golden stones and yellow sallies on the banks. Don’t be afraid of tying on a salmon fly pattern and give it a shot. If you can find a riffle stop and fish it. PMD’s and mahoganies are going to get you some fish in the boat. If you are out on the water late. Have a selection of may fly spinners in your fly box. Streamer fishing on overcast days is real good. Use dark patterns strip them in nice and slow. Chances are you will get a big one. Be safe out there and be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and insect repellant. Enjoy!

Tight Lines!

The South Fork of the Snake and it's strong tail waters provide incredible angling opportunities.   Fishing along the South Fork of the Snake River's banks, riffles, and channels provides a dream angling environment.   With large and varied hatches through out all seasons, South Fork Outfitters is ideally positioned to help you understand and enjoy this immense Idaho resource.

We believe that we can offer virtually any fly fishing experience you might desire.   Our local waters provide experiences from highly technical dry fly fishing for large rainbows to streamer fishing for big brown trout.

South Fork Outfitters can provide you a great deal of information on fishing the South Fork of the Snake and other regional waters.  South Fork Outfitters provides guided services from Palisades Reservoir down to and through out the upper South Fork and Main Snake River, Blackfoot River and Blackfoot Reservoir.

We want you to be aware that on these waters, like most rivers, there are areas that can be dangerous to both the wade fisherman and the inexperienced boatmen.  It is always a good idea to research the water you are planning to fish prior to your trip. Hiring a professional guide to take you down the river is an excellent way to not only learn the best areas to fish, but to also to provide a foundation of knowledge for future trips.

Though devoid of white water, the South Fork is a big and dangerous river with powerful hydraulics, whirlpools, and standing waves even at lower flows. Great caution should be taken when floating the river as it has the tendency to lull one to sleep. Canoes are not recommended when the flows exceed 14,000 c.f.s. and only those with extensive boating experience should attempt a river trip of any kind.

Please call the Fly Shop to discuss trip itinerary, guide bookings, flow levels, and other unknowns:
